WFB due for overhaul?

Postby berger15 » Thu Jan 08, 2015 9:34 am

Ok, this has caused a bit of chat on a few other sites, and I thought "I wonder what the AoS members make of this?" - since it's been a little quieter here of late!

This cropped up on BoLS (Link) - and it appears that there is going to be some streamlining of the model range (Empire, Dwarfs, Ogres and Brets now fall under Empire - Chaos Warriors, Beasts and Daemons all just Chaos, etc), a massive update on the fluff (which possibly is overdue), a change to round bases, smaller selection of core models for each faction, and the introduction of models rules with the model sets - some of which will be limited run. As I understand the rumours, 8th ed rules will still be the basis - just with some tweaks.

Is this going to get new gamers into the hobby? Possibly with a lower initial buy-in cost I think it may. Flip side is, it may make hundreds of models some people have obsolete - rage-quitting anyone?

Is it too early to give out the "understatement of the year" award?!

Apathy-quitting ;)

Skirmish game? No thanks I've got enough of those.
Not set in the Old World? No thanks I play games in enough interesting settings that it's going to have to blow the bloody doors off to be of interest.

Wait and see really. I stopped playing fantasy years ago as 8th wasn't of any interest as a ruleset. The End of Times stuff just hasn't excited me either. A smaller skirmish game may entice my group into playing it due to reduced model requirements, but I certainly won't need to buy anything. New stuff would have to be very pretty indeed to get me buying.

Oh god, GW, what are you doing? First they kill my interest in 40K by releasing a new edition just 2 years after the last one and now they appear to be totally destryoing WHFB. I've said it before and I'll say it again. GW, you can bite my shiny metal ass! I love WHFB, always have and have always considered it the better system, it's just a pity nobody at the Raiders ever really played it. And now they are just tearing it to pieces, destroying 30 years of fluff. Don't they learn from Hollywood? Reboots nearly always suck! Think I'll go my own way now totally with them and just remeber them for the glory days back in the 90s.

Apart from the 40K SM Centurians (which I really don't like :( ), have they ever really failed on that front? GW do make some stunning minis, and have amazing casting quality on the hard plastics.

There seem to be a few gamers I chat to switching to KoW, just to get back to basics (and it does seem pretty basic from my quick view). I gave up fantasy at 8th, but I still love the old fluff. Since there could be a 40K crossover, (hinted at both in the past and present fluff) maybe Sigmar is actually a primarch . . . .

Nope there were 20 primarchs and they have all been accounted for, since space marine chapters are just scaled down legions split in countless ways (Blood angels, Flesh Tearers etc for an example all have Sang as their primarch)

Stryder, not really. Only 18 have been named as two of the orginal Legions were expunged from records and, unless they have been named in the FW HH stuff, the Black Library HH books or 7th ed, basically any point in the last two years since I stopped caring about anything GW, then they could still slip Sigmar in as one of the lost Primarchs.

I never played WHFB but I too have given up on 40K. Tried Flames of War which is very good and am now more into Dropzone Commander than anythig else.

GW just turned me off with new broken rules, ne overly expensive units, eliminating the old expensive units I had and used, etc.

For them to return to the market IMHO, they need to re-focus on what made them in the first place, a fun game that you could get into for a reasonable amount of coin.

TW, exactly. 40K has got progressively more broken, same as WHFB. I think WHFB hit it's peak at 6th ed, that version was just about right. But as usual GW just couldn't leave it alone and kept messing with it. Same as 40K, 3rd/4th ed were just about there but again they just couldn't leave it alone. The problem is they kept trying to shoehorn more and more bells and whistles in to an engine that just couldn't handle it. Couple this with Army Book/Codex writing teams that just never seemed to speak to each other resulting in broken and/or contracdictory rules and you just end up with a mess. Even back in 3rd ed I remember this happening, you used to be able to get an Aspiring Champion of Khorne with a power fist cheaper than an SM Vet Sergeant with a power sword! As time went on though this got worse with the inevitable power creep. Truthfully GWs Golden Period was through the 90s and in to the early to mid 2000s. Then it all went wrong. Sad though it is, I can't see them lasting until the end of the decade.

I've played WHF since the first box edition (4th Ed? HE vs Goblins), but now I've been exposed to 22 years of rules systems from various manufacturers I'm of the opinion there's never been a "good" edition of WHF.

Which is not the same as saying I didn't enjoy some of them, but if I played them now with the breadth of experience of other systems I wouldn't enjoy them as much.

Yeah, 4th ed was the first boxed game. I think that 6th ed was just about right, but of course this is a relative thing. :) I think I should have said least broken.

Do Alpharius and Omegon count as two Primarchs? Twins or not, there are two of them. If so, then it means there is only one un-named Primarch, and one legion without a Primarch attached. To me this seems unlikely, but with the fluff and BL now starting to contradict each other, it is entirely possible. :P

I think mantic should jump in and write up lists for Lizardmen for KoW as GW appear to be parting with them.

And Dwarves. Anyone want to buy a WHFB Dwarf army? :)
