Epic Game

Epic Game

Postby _stu_ » Mon May 19, 2014 10:20 pm

Peeling off from the other thread, I thought this would make more sense being talked about on it's own (going from general game discussion to the minutae of an Epic Format game didnt really compute).

We're playing a 300pt per side transport scenario tomorrow, with the Rebels trying to defend the Transport 'Quantum Storm' from an Imperial attack (not seen Lis & Dave's list yet, so cant confirm whether it is being led by Mr Vader or not).

The Quantum Storm is kitted out as follows:

GR-75 Medium Transport (71)
GR-75 Medium Transport (30), Quantum Storm (4), Jan Dodonna (6), Toryn Farr (6), Comms Booster (4), Tibanna Gas Supplies (4), Slicer Tools (7), Retrofit (10)

And I'm torn between taking a posse of 9 named pilots led by Wedge:

Wedge Antilles (37)
X-Wing (29), R2-D2 (4), Engine Upgrade (4)

Ibtisam (43)
B-Wing (28), Advanced Sensors (3), Heavy Laser Cannon (7), Flechette Torpedo (2), Flechette Torpedo (2), Deadeye (1)

Ten Numb (41)
B-Wing (31), Advanced Sensors (3), Heavy Laser Cannon (7)

Kyle Katarn (31)
HWK-290 (21), Blaster Turret (4), Recon Specialist (3), Moldy Crow (3)

Arvel Crynyd (30)
A-Wing (23), A-Wing Test Pilot (0), Cluster Missiles (4), Push the Limit (3)

Tycho Celchu (33)
A-Wing (26), Cluster Missiles (4), Push the Limit (3)

Red Squadron Pilot (27)
X-Wing (23), Proton Torpedoes (4)

Red Squadron Pilot (27)
X-Wing (23), Proton Torpedoes (4)

Outer Rim Smuggler (31)
YT-1300 (27), Nien Nunb (1), Millennium Falcon (1), Anti-Pursuit Lasers (2)

Or 11 Redshirts led by Chewie

Chewbacca (58)
YT-1300 (42), Push the Limit (3), Gunner (5), Weapons Engineer (3), Millennium Falcon (1), Engine Upgrade (4)

Green Squadron Pilot (26)
A-Wing (19), Cluster Missiles (4), Push the Limit (3)

Green Squadron Pilot (26)
A-Wing (19), Cluster Missiles (4), Push the Limit (3)

Red Squadron Pilot (24)
X-Wing (23), R2 Astromech (1)

Red Squadron Pilot (24)
X-Wing (23), R2 Astromech (1)

Red Squadron Pilot (24)
X-Wing (23), R2 Astromech (1)

Gold Squadron Pilot (18)
Gold Squadron Pilot (18)
Gold Squadron Pilot (18)

Blue Squadron Pilot (32)
B-Wing (22), Advanced Sensors (3), Heavy Laser Cannon (7)

Blue Squadron Pilot (32)
B-Wing (22), Advanced Sensors (3), Heavy Laser Cannon (7)

Thematically both lists are pretty similar, but I think I'll probably be swayed into using the named pilots for the additional card texts. Chewies is pretty handy (uncritable) and I'm yet to test out Kyle Katarn dishing out focus, so I'm keen to give him a whirl.

On an aside, Dave played a YYYA list this afternoon where all the Y's had an engine upgrade. Having the heavy bombers jinking in and out of asteroids with boost was a little unnerving.

After playing a game with the transport, it's very much a support ship in the true sense of the word. I managed to hand out buffs to my main aggressive ships most turns, and dumbed down most enemy ships as they closed in to try and take the transport out. I'm not sure yet whether I'm keen on the Huge ships activating outside of the main sequence, as I can argue both sides with myself. It might play out differently with multiple 'huges' on the board, so will revisit this one I think. It's a difficult ship to keep within the confines of the board though, so thorough planning ahead of movement is pretty critical (no instakills of my own pilots was a relief, but I did ram a full loaded Major Rhymer before he could loose off his ordinance at me!) In other news, Kyle and Chewie paid for themselves many times over - Chewie sucked up loads of Crits and managed to run interference on a few Interceptors. Kyle single handedly kept Soontir Fel twiddling his thumbs for most of the major engagements and kept my B-Wings stocked up on Focus, at least until he took a 'ignore your pilot skill' crit, and ending the game with almost a dozen stacked focus :/

I think next time out, I'd probably hold more of the escort in a closer formation to maximise the points outlay. I had a habit of splintering small groups off to go chasing bad guys, and probably more importantly 'not declare a K-turn with an already stresses B-Wing' - the smile on Lis' face as she swiftly forced Ibtisam off the board (fully shielded and bristling with tordepoes) - was priceless :)

Time for me to ponder an Imperial List for me to play the 'hunters' side of the encounter.

Sounds like a great game!

Your experience of the Transport was similar to mine, but we were playing on a larger table. A Chewie Falcon is great!

Yup.Chewie feels like a much better use of the falcon than han,but it sometimes feels like his PS5 is a little low. I suppose the reduced points make up for it though.

We played on a 5x4 board, but I think the extra foot width would really help, which we're gonna do next time. Hopefully be picking up a Tantive soon, so that's an excuse for another Epic game. In the meantime,I think we have froggy coming over for a few more tutorial games to get a feel for the extra ships and pilots we've picked up since his last games. He had a thing for the Awing in the rogue squadron PC games :-)
